Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family


Thank you for your interest in Project Self-Sufficiency’s Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family program! To participate, click on the button for our online sign-up form.

How to adopt a family: 


  1. Fill out the online sign-up form by clicking the button above. 
  2. PSS staff will email you with your match from pss.aaf@pssoc.org 
  3. Put together your donation! You can either: a) Shop and put together a basket of nonperishable food items for a Thanksgiving meal and include a gift card to a local grocery store for perishable items. OR b) Purchase a gift card to the suggested grocery store listed on your match card. 
  4. Deliver your donation during designated drop off times to the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Huntington Beach, CA.

Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family FAQ


What is Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family (AAF)? 

This is a seasonal program where community donors sign up to be matched with a Project Self-Sufficiency family.  We match you with a family of a size you determine.  The donor puts together a Thanksgiving basket by purchasing nonperishable food items for a Thanksgiving meal and including a grocery store gift card for perishable items. 


How do I sign up? 

You can sign up online here. If you are having trouble with the online form, please email pss.aaf@pssoc.org or call (949) 478-1914 and we will provide a fillable PDF or paper form. 

When is the deadline to sign up? 
We don’t have an official deadline. However, families are matched on a first come, first served basis.  We recommend signing up as soon as possible. 


What is the difference between fully participating in AAF and donating gift cards?

By selecting "Fully participating" on your form, you are selecting to be matched with a family and will either donate a gift basket or a grocery store gift card for your family match. If you select "Donate gift cards," refer to the question below. 


I can’t do Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Family this year.  What are other ways I can help? 
Please consider donating grocery store gift cards.  You can make a monetary donation via online through our PayPal donate button below, or mail gift cards or a check to Project Self-Sufficiency, 307 Placentia Ave, Suite 203, Newport Beach, CA 92663. Please indicate that your donation is for Adopt-a-Family. Food insecurity can be a challenge for our clients, and it is so helpful for have extra grocery store gift cards on hand to help them out in a time of need. 


What do I put in the basket?

We ask that you create a basket/collection of nonperishable food items and include a gift card for perishable items. The total value of the basket and/or gift cards should be based on the size of the family and what you are comfortable with financially. We recommend a value of approximately $100-200 per family.

Where and when do I drop off the basket?
This year we are excited to partner with the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Huntington Beach.

Why aren’t you at the Senior Center in Huntington Beach anymore? 
We received a grant that allowed us to separate from the City of Huntington Beach and expand our services to clients all over Orange County.  We were offered office space at the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living in Newport Beach, where our program now operates from.  We have limited storage space at our new office, so the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection was gracious enough to offer us a convenient location to house our Adopt-a-Family program.


Who gets the baskets?
You will be matched with a family in the Project Self-Sufficiency program.  Each family is composed of a single parent and at least one child.  Our clients are all low-income, single parents who are enrolled in college pursuing higher education in the Orange County area.


How am I matched with a family?

You indicate on your sign-up form your preference for family size.  We do our best to match you with your preference.  Signing up as early as possible increases the chances that we can honor your preference. 


Why do you limit the number of families I can adopt? 
We want to make sure many different people in the community have an opportunity to adopt a family.  You are welcome to donate additional grocery store gift cards, which we save for times when some clients experience food insecurity throughout the year.


Can I meet the family I am matched with?
For confidentiality purposes, PSS families do not have direct contact with donors.  We appreciate your understanding.  You will receive a thank you card in the mail from the family you were matched with, which we forward from the family.  You are welcome to include a note or card in the Thanksgiving basket with your holiday well wishes for the family.
